SURRENDERING

There are other ways in which our will becomes distorted. We tend to run this universal will through our patterns of worldly desire. Desires that are held in our small, egoic mind are usually not desires that serve the soul’s overall purpose of our lives. Supercharged attention, as much as we are able to access it, is a force that we need to use impeccably, which means to use it in alignment with our soul’s overall purpose. Most humans, feeling that they are in charge of their own lives, are not aware of their soul’s larger purpose and tend to fall into choices that are mostly small and self-serving. They attempt to use the force of will often in trivial and distracting pursuits to satisfy the temptations and concepts of the limited mind. This greatly reduces their power of will. There is an innate guilt that goes with being autonomous and pleasing one’s limited self, and that guilt dilutes the force of will.

It is using this force of will to get the things that we think we need but that have very little value to the soul’s purpose that is the use and abuse of the power of will. In other words, the will can perform within the human egoic pattern as a source of personal power for the limited ego’s purpose, or it can be used in service to the soul’s highest aspirations on its journey toward the clear light of cosmic wisdom.

As we look at this third key, we see that surrender of the old ways of using will is an important and meaningful aspect of ascending toward reunion with our Self. This brings the separate will into alignment with divine will.

Surrender, in spiritual terms, is the surrender of the separate ego—that part of us that believes itself to be separate from the Divine. The belief in our separate, autonomous identity is part and parcel of living in the third dimension. In this dimension our free will is our God-given right. It is our free will and freedom of choice that we have in this world which also allow us to be as selfish and as trivial as we please. There is no right and wrong in this. It is not a judgment, but is simply an individual choice, and in the third dimension everyone has the right of choice.

Yet if we wish to ascend, we must look long and hard at what this freedom of choice and what our free will really mean. A first glance reveals that in view of the truth of non-separation between us and the universal mind, we begin to see that our autonomy is just an idea held in the limited mind. It does not really exist. Or rather, we are not surrendering anything except the idea of our free will—since there is no such thing as the separate state. The separate state with its separate will is part of the appearance in the phenomenal world. In truth there cannot be any “my will.
